Boat and outboard motor FAQ
What must be registered, June expirations, fees and paperwork.
Which boats and motors have to be registered?
Any motorized boat, plus canoes, kayaks and paddleboats that use a motor or a sail. Outboard motors over 10 horsepower get their own title and registration. Paddle-only canoes and kayaks are optional.
When is my boat registration due?
By July 1. Every boat and motor registration in Oklahoma runs out at the end of June, and you can renew for one year or three.
How is the boat registration fee figured?
It's based on value. The first year costs $1 for the first $150 of value and $1 for every $100 after that. For the next nine years the fee is 90% of the year before, and from year 11 on it stays the same. The State's maximum is $151. Our boat registration guide works through an example.
Can I renew my boat without coming in?
I bought a boat from a private seller. What now?
Title it, register it and pay the tax within 30 days. Bring Form BM-26, the notarized title (or other ownership papers), and Form BM-10 from the seller confirming the hull number. If the seller didn't fill out a BM-10, a Licensed Operator can inspect the boat and note the number on your BM-26.
What do I keep on the boat?
The current registration, any time the boat is in use, and the current registration decal has to be attached to the boat. The first renewal after November 1, 2023 also comes with a carbon monoxide warning decal under Andy's Law; stick it inside the boat where people will see it.
