REAL ID and driver license FAQ
When you need one, the documents, fees, timing and renewals.
Is a REAL ID required in Oklahoma?
It's optional. You only need one to board a domestic flight or get into places like military bases and some federal buildings, and a valid U.S. passport works for those too. Your regular license is still good for driving, voting and everyday ID.
How do I know if I already have one?
Look at the top right corner of your license. A REAL ID has a star there; no star means it isn't one.
What should I bring for a REAL ID?
If you're a U.S. citizen, bring:
- Proof of who you are: a birth certificate (not a hospital certificate) or a U.S. passport
- Two documents showing your Oklahoma address, like a utility bill and a credit card statement
- Your Social Security number
- Marriage certificates, divorce decrees or court orders covering any name change since birth
Permanent residents and other non-citizens bring different documents, and this list leaves out the exceptions. Service Oklahoma's REAL ID checklist (opens in a new tab) covers every case and builds your own list.
Can I get my REAL ID in Catoosa?
Yes, if you're a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Come in person for your first REAL ID; you can renew it online after that. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or legal guardian along.
When will my card arrive?
Plan on about three weeks by mail, and know that it can't be rushed. The paper temporary you get at the counter won't get you through TSA, so give yourself at least four weeks before any flight.
How much is a driver license?
A 4-year license renewal is $38.50, and an 8-year renewal is $77. Replacing a license or ID is $25. State ID renewals are $25 for four years or $50 for eight. If you're 65 or older, your license or ID is free (CDLs excluded). Our license renewal guide covers renewing online.
Ready to renew?
