Tags and registration FAQ

Timing, one- or two-year registration, what to have ready and lost decals.

Every registered vehicle in Oklahoma needs its tag renewed each year. These are the tag questions we answer most at our Catoosa office.

How often does my registration need to be renewed?

Once a year, for every vehicle you own, whether you drive it daily or it sits in the garage. You can also choose a two-year registration instead. It covers this year and next year, so it generally costs double: there's no discount for choosing two years, but you skip next year's renewal.

How early can I renew?

Online renewals open the month before your tag expires. Use our online renewal link (opens the State of Oklahoma site in a new tab) and Service Oklahoma's Navigate site opens with our Catoosa office already assigned. We work to get renewals in the mail the next business day.

What will I need to renew online?

Have these ready before you start:

  • The vehicle's full VIN
  • The license plate number
  • The complete Oklahoma title number
  • Your current Oklahoma insurance policy
  • The owner's driver license number, or a FEIN for a business
  • A credit card or checking account to pay

Not sure how it works? Read how online tag renewal works.

Can I renew at your office instead?

Of course. Bring your driver license, your Oklahoma insurance card and the VIN or plate number. Walk in any time we're open: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM.

What if my renewal reminder never came?

Renew anyway. The reminder is a courtesy, and the late penalty applies whether it arrived or not. Service Oklahoma offers email reminders on its vehicle renewal page (opens in a new tab).

How do I get the new Oklahoma plate design?

Just ask when you renew. The new red Oklahoma plate came out in September 2024 and isn't sent automatically. Switching costs $4 with your yearly renewal, or $9 any other time.

Someone took my decal. Now what?

Order a replacement decal online (opens the State of Oklahoma site in a new tab) or a replacement plate (opens the State of Oklahoma site in a new tab), or replace it at our office. Either way the State charges $9 for a decal, or a decal and plate, plus the $1.50 insurance fee and a mailing fee if it's sent to you. In the office it takes Form 797-D, signed in front of a notary; ours can do it. The form is on our forms page.
