Title transfer FAQ
Deadlines, electronic titles, paperwork, liens and lost titles.
I just bought a vehicle. How long do I have to put the title in my name?
You have two months from the date of sale. Oklahoma added an earlier step in 2024, though: a vehicle bought in the state has to be pre-registered within two business days, and it needs a metal plate with pre-registration decals within ten days. Our pre-registration guide lays out the whole timeline.
Will I get a paper title?
Oklahoma switched to electronic titles on July 1, 2025, so ownership can be kept as a digital record with the State. Paper titles already out there still work until the next sale or transfer, and title fees didn't change. You can request a paper title when the vehicle has no lien, once your loan is paid off, or when you're moving or selling out of state. Also, if you buy the vehicle from a dealership, they will give you a paper title, but the new title that is created after the transfer can be electronic depending on if there is a lien.
What paperwork does the buyer bring?
- The seller's signed, notarized Oklahoma title (for an electronic title, Form 718 instead)
- A lien release, if the title shows a lien in the seller's name
- Your driver license and proof of Oklahoma insurance
A standard Oklahoma title has a place for the price and the odometer reading, so a bill of sale is optional and Form 729 usually isn't needed. If the price isn't on the title or a bill of sale, Form 722-1 declares it. You don't have to print anything ahead of time, either: we can usually print the forms you need right here. They're also on our forms page.
My loan is paid off. How do I get my title?
While you have a loan, your lender holds the title, because Oklahoma is a title-holding state. Once it's paid off, the lender gives you a lien release. The lien stays on the State's record until that release is turned in, and after that you can request a paper title if you want one. If you bring in the lien release and your driver license, you can pay for a duplicate title to be sent in the mail.
How do I replace a lost title?
Complete Form 701-7, the Application for Duplicate Title, and get the owner's signature notarized. Bring it with your current registration, the VIN and your decal number. The State charges $11, and the new title arrives by mail. Our Catoosa office has a notary if you need one.
Can I move my plate to the car I just bought?
Yes, as long as you're keeping the same kind of registration. Bring the plate when you title the new vehicle and you'll get credit for the time left on it.
