Fees and penalties FAQ

Yearly fees, the grace period, late penalties and tax exemptions.

Every fee below is set by the State of Oklahoma (checked September 2026). Your exact total is figured when you pay.

What's the yearly registration fee?

It goes down as the vehicle ages. For a standard car or truck, a yearly registration costs $97.50 for the first four registration years, $87.50 for years five through eight, $67.50 for years nine through twelve, $47.50 for years thirteen through sixteen, and $27.50 after that. Each amount is the State's registration fee plus its $1.50 insurance fee. Our registration fees guide has the full breakdown, including motorcycles.

How late can I renew before I pay a penalty?

You have 30 days after your registration expires. Once that grace period is over, most vehicles are charged $1 a day, capped at $100. The State isn't allowed to waive it.

Does a late penalty apply to a car I just bought?

Not right away. You have two months from the purchase date to title and register a newly bought vehicle before penalties begin.

What else will I pay when I title a car?

Expect the $11 title fee and the $17 transfer fee, plus excise tax based on the vehicle's value. Vehicles with an out-of-state or tribal title also need a $4 VIN inspection. For an excise tax estimate, use the calculator linked from Service Oklahoma's fees page (opens in a new tab).

Who doesn't have to pay excise tax?

Oklahoma has dozens of exemptions, most of them rare. A few examples:

  • A vehicle given, not sold, between spouses or between a parent and child, using Form 794
  • A vehicle awarded in a divorce, when the decree names it by VIN
  • Moving a vehicle between a trust and its trustee
  • Taking a name off a title
  • 100% disabled veterans, for one vehicle every three years

Bring proof of the exemption with you, and call (918) 379-5030 if you want us to check first.
