New to Oklahoma? Out-of-state transfer FAQ

The documents, the VIN inspection, out-of-state purchases and your license.

What documents do I bring for an out-of-state transfer?

  • The title from your previous state
  • Form 701-6, the Application for Oklahoma Certificate of Title (we can usually print it for you here; it's also on our forms page)
  • A valid driver license
  • Your Oklahoma insurance
  • The vehicle, so it can be inspected

Keep copies of everything, since originals may not come back to you.

What's a VIN inspection?

A quick check that the vehicle identification number on your vehicle matches the title. Oklahoma requires it for vehicles with a title from another state or a tribal title. Drive the vehicle to our office and we'll do it while you're here. The State's fee is $4.

I bought my car out of state. Is that different?

A little. Along with the title assigned to you, Form 701-6, your license, insurance and the vehicle, bring the purchase agreement if it was purchased from a dealership.

What about my driver license?

Oklahoma expects new residents to switch to an Oklahoma license. If yours is still valid, or expired less than six months ago, you can typically transfer it without retesting. Fees are $42.50 for four years or $81 for eight. To transfer a driver license, you usually need to bring in your birth certificate or a valid passport, you need to know your Social Security number, and you need some proof of address. Give us a call at (918) 379-5030 before you come in and we'll tell you whether we can do your license here or you'll need a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office.

Do I need REAL ID documents too?

Only if you want your new Oklahoma license to be REAL ID compliant. In that case, bring two proofs of Oklahoma residency instead of one. See our REAL ID questions.
