Notice of transfer FAQ for sellers
What it does, the $10 fee, what you need and how to file.
Why would I file a notice of transfer?
It records with Service Oklahoma that you've sold or given away the vehicle, and it blocks certain transactions on the vehicle until the new owner transfers the title. Filing is optional, but it puts the sale on the record. If you do the pre-registration yourself, you don't need a notice, and you can't file one. Pre-registration is free, so it's usually the better way.
Does it transfer the title to the buyer?
No. Only the buyer can do that, by bringing the signed title to a Licensed Operator or Service Oklahoma. The notice just tells the State that the vehicle changed hands.
What information do I need to file?
- The VIN or the title number
- The buyer's name and address
- The date of sale
- Your own ID or driver license
Where do I file it, and what does it cost?
File online (opens the State of Oklahoma site in a new tab) with our office already selected, or file it at our Catoosa office. Either way, the State's fee is $10. If you'd rather use paper, it's Form 773 on our forms page.
Should I leave my plate on the car?
No. Oklahoma plates stay with the owner, not the vehicle. Take it off before the buyer drives away and keep it for your next vehicle. Our guide to selling a car in Oklahoma covers the rest of the sale.
What does the buyer have to do?
Within two business days of the sale, the seller or the buyer pre-registers the vehicle. The buyer then has ten days to put a metal plate and pre-registration decals on it, and two months from the date of sale to title and register it.
