Oklahoma's registration fees are set by the State, and they drop as your vehicle gets older. Here's what you'll pay and where each number comes from. These fees were checked in September 2026; your exact total is figured when you pay.
Yearly registration fees
The yearly cost depends on the vehicle's registration year. Each amount includes the State's $1.50 insurance fee:

A two-year registration adds next year's cost to this year's, so it generally comes to double, with no discount.

Excise tax
When a vehicle changes hands, Oklahoma charges excise tax based on its value. Service Oklahoma's Sales & Excise Tax Calculator estimates it from NADA pricing, which can change, so the final amount may differ a little. The calculator is linked from the State's fees page (opens in a new tab).
Oklahoma has dozens of excise tax exemptions. Most are uncommon, but they do come up. For example, these transfers don't owe it: vehicles given between spouses or between parents and children (Form 794), transfers in a divorce decree, transfers between a trust and its trustee, removing a name from a title, and one vehicle every three years for 100% disabled veterans. Ask us if you think one might apply.
Plate and decal fees
- Replacement decal, or decal and plate: $9, plus the $1.50 insurance fee and a mailing fee if it's sent to you, with a notarized Form 797-D
- Switching to the new red Oklahoma plate: $4 with your yearly renewal, $9 any other time
Late penalties
Renewals get a 30-day grace period after the registration expires. After that, most vehicles are charged $1 a day, up to $100. A vehicle you just bought gets two months from the date of sale. By law, penalties can't be waived.
